From brown coal to healthier soil
Research is exploring how Latrobe Valley brown coal can be used in humate soil products and slow-release fertilizer blends that retain nutrients, support soil carbon and improve soil health.
Published trials of brown-coal and urea blends reported significant reductions in nitrous oxide emissions—29% in planted soils and up to 40% in unplanted soil columns—compared with urea alone. Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas with about 273 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over 100 years.
