Eden of the East
A restored landscape can begin with something small enough to disappear between two fingers.
Seed carries the form of a future plant, and successful planting depends on germination, species selection and site fit. Provenance can matter. Young roots need to develop into stock robust enough to leave the protected nursery and meet water, weather, soil and competition in the field.
Habitat Creations places that early work at the backbone of its operations. The company says its story began in the nursery, and its Moe facility now helps grow aquatic, riparian and terrestrial plants for environmental and built landscapes. Those plants supply Habitat Creations’ own teams as well as water authorities, councils, catchment managers, contractors and private landholders.
The nursery’s capabilities trace a chain from collection to planting. Seed can be gathered and held in a seed bank. Plants can be propagated for a particular provenance. Contract-growing programmes can align the stock with the quantities, formats and timing a project requires.
That chain changes the meaning of a nursery row. Tubestock is compact because the destination may need thousands of plants. A tray can represent a future wetland edge or the beginning of cover along disturbed ground. Uniformity helps a planting team work efficiently; biological variety helps the landscape function.
The Moe site also shows the nursery adapting its own systems. Habitat Creations’ account of a 2021 upgrade describes greater holding capacity and the capture and reuse of excess watering water for appropriate species. The infrastructure sits behind the visible plants, supporting the repeated care needed at scale.
Seen through Eden of the East Foundation’s Power of Colour lens, this work expands colour beyond the flower bed. It includes the green of new establishment, the changing bands of vegetation along water and the seasonal colour that returns when habitat begins to function again.
The contemporary Garden City connection is the relationship between settlement and living systems. Towns and infrastructure sit within landscapes. Repair asks people to grow, place and care for the plants that hold soil, filter water and create shelter around them.
By the time a project looks established, the seed bank and nursery trays are out of sight. Their work remains in every plant that takes hold. The larger landscape begins there—in Moe, with small living material readied for a much bigger task.
