04 A morning in the harbour town
08 Twelve tables worth the drive
14 The reef at first light
20 Makers & markets
26 Where to rest your head
Before the cafés fill and the tour boats slip their lines, the town belongs to the early risers and the pelicans.
The best plan here is barely a plan at all. Start with a flat white you can carry, walk the length of the foreshore, and let the day set its own pace.
By eight the bakeries are trading and the fishmongers have laid out the night's catch on beds of crushed ice, silver and bright.
Locals will tell you the light is the thing — low and gold, throwing long shadows across the sand and turning the shallows a pale, impossible green.
Stay for the tide. It changes everything: the birds, the boats, the colour of the hills across the bay.
From a corrugated-iron shack doing the day's best fish tacos to a white-cloth room where the tasting menu runs to nine courses — the east eats well.
Corner of Wharf & Macrossan. Open from 6.
The counter at Iimi's, mid-morning.The pastry case is the reason to arrive early; by ten the almond croissants are a memory and the queue reaches the door.
Order the eggs, sit by the window, and watch the town wake up around you.
