There is something deeply satisfying about pressing a button you built yourself. The Control Freak Workshop turns that feeling into a two-hour hands-on experience at Latrobe Regional Gallery.
Led by Preston McNeil, creator of the Arca Arcade: Round One exhibition, this workshop invites participants to assemble their own arcade-style joystick controller from a complete plug-and-play kit. McNeil brings expertise and enthusiasm from his work developing DIY arcade experiences, making this a rare chance to learn directly from the artist behind the concept.
Each kit contains every component needed to build a PC-compatible controller. Once assembled, participants are introduced to DIY arcade software, put their new controller through its paces in a real gaming session, and then take the finished device home. Teams of two are welcome, and no prior technical knowledge is required — just curiosity and a willingness to tinker.
Workshops like this one strengthen the region's creative and digital culture by giving local residents hands-on access to maker skills and game technology. Supported by Creative New Zealand's International Presenters Fund, the event connects Latrobe City to a broader conversation about accessible, community-centred creative practice.
The workshop runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 1 August 2026 at Latrobe Regional Gallery, 138 Commercial Road, Morwell. Places are strictly limited to 15 kits, so booking is essential.
