Seventeen handknitted creatures occupy the gallery in eerie, tender silence, each one a species on the edge of disappearing. Anatomy Lessons draws visitors into a world where craft becomes a form of mourning and wonder.

Anatomy Lessons is a major touring exhibition by New Zealand-based, Australian artist Michele Beevors. The work is the accumulation of 17 years of intricate knitting practice, through which Beevors explores climate change, animal rights, the labour of care, and knitting as a response to trauma and ecological grief.

Visitors will move through Gallery 1 and 2 encountering soft, animal-like fossil sculptures that balance curiosity with unease. Each handknitted form blurs the boundary between sculpture and craft, prompting reflection on how humans live alongside — and at the expense of — other species, and what it means to inhabit a world reshaped entirely by human activity.

For Latrobe Regional Gallery, Anatomy Lessons takes on additional resonance as a eulogy for the creatures Beevors has chosen to honour. The exhibition invites this community to consider local and global ecological responsibility, and to sit with the difficult question at the heart of the work: what will the future look like for humans without animals?
