Strange World is open and waiting to be explored inside The Lane at Latrobe Regional Gallery, where bold textures, playful patterns and curious colours fill a free indoor space designed just for kids. It is an invitation to touch, make and imagine in a gallery setting that feels anything but ordinary.
The Lane is Latrobe Regional Gallery's dedicated creative play space for young visitors, and this iteration — Strange World — draws its inspiration from two exhibitions currently showing at the gallery: Strange Company | Unusual, Unseen and Overlooked Works from the Collection, and Anatomy Lessons. The space transforms ideas from those exhibitions into hands-on experiences accessible to children and their families.
Visitors are encouraged to wander through at their own pace, picking up materials and trying self-guided activities that respond to specific artworks from the two exhibitions. Children can handle different textures, engage with colour and pattern, and create their own small masterpieces to take home. The space is designed with children under ten in mind, making it a comfortable and stimulating environment for toddlers through to primary-age kids.
Free, accessible cultural experiences like Strange World play an important role in connecting Latrobe City families with the arts from an early age. By embedding creative play within a regional gallery context, the program helps normalise gallery visits and builds a sense of belonging and pride in the region's cultural infrastructure.
