About
Some of the most compelling works in any gallery are the ones you never get to see. Strange Company opens the storeroom door, bringing together pieces from the Latrobe Regional Gallery Collection that resist easy categorisation and have long sat outside the spotlight.
Curated by Alexandra Drummond, Collections Curator at Latrobe Regional Gallery, Strange Company draws on the reality that galleries inevitably display only a fraction of what they hold. Many works remain in storage not because they lack merit, but because they challenge aesthetic expectations, sit outside familiar narratives, or simply defy conventional labels.
Visitors to Galleries 4 and 5 will encounter works that are playful, experimental, bold, excessive or unsettling. Some push against traditional ideas of scale, material, subject or taste. Rather than framing these pieces as curiosities or oddities, the exhibition treats their strangeness as a strength, allowing unexpected connections to emerge across the collection.
For Latrobe City, Strange Company is a timely reminder that regional collections hold far more than their display walls suggest. The exhibition invites the community to look beyond the familiar and engage with the full richness of what has been gathered, preserved and acquired locally over decades.
Strange Company runs from 6 June to 6 September 2026 in Galleries 4 and 5 at Latrobe Regional Gallery, 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, open daily from 10am to 4pm. For more information call (03) 5128 5700 or email [email protected].
