Sparks fly and possibilities open up at this free hands-on welding night designed for women and non-binary people curious about a career in the trades. No experience required — just a willingness to get on the tools and see what engineering and manufacturing can offer.
Hosted by TAFE Gippsland at its Yallourn Campus, this Try-a-Trade Night is delivered as part of the AMWU's Breaking Barriers: Women in Trades and Tech project, funded by the Australian Government through the Building Women's Careers Program. It is designed to provide a safe, supportive introduction to welding and fabrication for attendees aged 15 and over.
Participants will learn basic welding skills using industry-standard tools and equipment, create their own metal project to take home, and hear information about apprenticeships and training pathways in welding, fabrication, mechanical and engineering trades. The evening runs from 5pm to 9pm and is entirely free of charge.
Events like this play a meaningful role in broadening participation in trades across the Latrobe Valley, a region with deep roots in engineering and manufacturing. By giving women and non-binary people direct access to hands-on experience and career information, this night helps build a more diverse and resilient local workforce.
