GMES Miniature Train Rides

About

The whistle blows, the wheels turn, and suddenly Newman Park feels a little more magical. Miniature steam and diesel trains carry passengers along the tracks every fourth Sunday, bringing smiles to riders of all ages.

The Gippsland Model Engineering Society has been running these community train days for many years, operated entirely by dedicated volunteers who build and maintain the locomotives themselves. The rides take place within the grounds of Newman Park on Peterkin Street, Traralgon, and run monthly from February through to November, with extra sessions added in December.

For $4 per person, you can climb aboard a finely crafted miniature train and enjoy a leisurely ride through the park between 12pm and 4pm. It is a hands-on experience that connects visitors with the craftsmanship and passion behind model engineering, and children in particular delight in the novelty of a real working steam locomotive at close range.

Events like these are a quiet but important thread in the fabric of Latrobe City community life. They keep a skilled volunteer tradition alive, draw families to local green spaces, and offer an affordable weekend outing that is genuinely distinctive to the Gippsland region.

Rides run on the fourth Sunday of each month through to 22 November 2026, from 12pm to 4pm at Newman Park, Peterkin Street, Traralgon. Enclosed footwear is required for all passengers. For more information, visit gmes.org.au or call 0457 317 655.
