Deep, slow-cooked aromas and the gentle warmth of East African spices greet visitors as the local Sudanese community opens its kitchen for the Latrobe Valley. This is cooking rooted in generosity, tradition and the pleasure of sharing a meal with strangers who quickly become friends.
The Sudanese session is the second of four Tuesday lunches making up the Cultural Food Festival at Morwell Neighbourhood House, a community initiative supported by the Victoria State Government. Each week spotlights a different culture through the universal language of food.
Guests will experience traditional Sudanese dishes — hearty stews served over flatbread, richly seasoned proteins and accompaniments that speak to centuries of culinary tradition. Members of the local Sudanese community prepare and serve the meal, offering a rare and genuine taste of their heritage.
For Latrobe City, occasions like this strengthen the bonds between newly arrived communities and long-established residents, building mutual understanding and respect through something as simple and profound as eating together.
